2014 marks the 30th year the Great Mohican Pow-Wow has been celebrated, and the diverse heritage the Pow-Wow displays keeps bringing people back each and every year. Native American hoop-dancers, storytellers, fire-starters, tomahawk throwers, and a variety of talented artists came together to share their talents and history through the festival.

"Pow-Wows have been around for hundreds of years," said Robbi Swift, Great Mohican Pow-Wow's vendor coordinator. "What they used to be is a social gathering. So everybody would dance, and they would sing. We travel all over the place. And for the communities around us, a lot of times for small children, it's the first time they get to see a real Indian," Swift laughed. "I have little kids that walk up to me and say, 'Are you really an Indian?' because what they see is what they see in the movies or what they see on TV. They're just amazed that they actually get to meet somebody that's really a Native American."

Vendors in the festival sold hand-made Native American style crafted goods, many of which are very time-consuming to make.

"A lot of people don't understand how much time it takes to do a lot of the arts and crafts that they see. It's not mass-produced. Everything is hand-made," Swift said. "It takes hours and hours, and some people have never seen that before. It's just an educational experience for everyone."
