ASHLAND, OH – Ashland University’s Schar College of Nursing and Health Sciences will co-sponsor an event titled “Finding Life, Hope, and Healing: Caring for Hospice Babies” on Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the AU College of Nursing and Health Sciences located at 1020 S. Trimble Road in Mansfield. The event is free and open to the public.

The event, which is co-sponsored by Nurses Christian Fellowship, will feature an address by Cori Salchert, who is a registered nurse, and worship leader Luke Miller. The event is free and open to the public, but those attending are asked to RSVP using this link

Salchert and her family captured headlines last year after a media outlet introduced the world to the family that has fostered six “hospice babies,” or infants who had a life-limiting diagnosis and whose parents had given up guardianship because of the situation. In the last several years, the family has fostered two babies in this situation and adopted a son, Charlie, in 2014. The family is currently caring for Charlie and fostering a 14-year-old boy.

“These children need nurses, but the overarching thing is, they need moms,” Salchert told the media outlet. “Too many people never do anything because they can’t do everything and can’t save everyone. For me, even though I can’t help every child, I’m happy to make a difference in the lives of a few.”

Salchert’s story also was featured on the Today Show website on Dec. 21, 2017, and she appeared live on the Today Show the next day with her biological daughter Charity.

Since the story first ran in the media, Salchert and her husband Mark have been invited to share their story through countless news outlets, television stations and a two-page spread in People magazine. Their tale has been translated into dozens of languages and run in newspapers abroad.

Nursing professionals can receive 1.0 contact hours available through the AU College of Nursing and Health Sciences, an accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the Ohio Nurses Association. The Ohio Nurses Association is an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
