MANSFIELD, OH - As we enter the last week of Women's History Month, WMFD will be giving you a look into the lives of six powerful women taking charge over at the 179th Airlift Wing.

Today, Monday, we introduce you to Lt. Col. Kelly Shifflet and Col. Patricia Barr, who are both leaders of the airlift wing's Mission Support Group. They are the first female duo to ever lead the group.

"Anything that needs done to support the members of the base happens in our group," said Shifflet, who is Deputy Commander of the Mission Support Group (MSG). This could mean assistance with food and housing, security, contracting, and civil engineering, just to name a few.

Shifflet was the first female member of her section but says that she has never felt limited in her career based on her gender. "If there's any limitations I've ever felt, it's internal," she said, "Just thinking, 'Can I do that role that's been mostly filled by a male?'"

Col. Patricia "Patty" Barr works alongside Lt. Col. Shifflet as the Mission Support Commander, a position she gained last year. Col. Barr attributes her success to growing up on a farm, where hard work was not optional.

Barr, who has a background as a mechanic, stated, "I learned at a young age the responsibilities of working hard and to get what you want or get what you need, you have to work for it." She said that she has never let her gender get in the way of where she wanted to go.

Be sure to check back on Wednesday for our next piece on the women of the 179th Airlift Wing!
