MANSFIELD, OH - The Mid-Ohio Education Service Center played host to the State Support Team Region 7 Outstanding Achievement Awards Banquet for Students and Educators tuesday night.

The event is held to recognize outstanding students and educators in special education in school districts all over Ohio. This gathering is a representation of excellence in school this past year in local districts. The top 20 students and educators were represented at the event.

These individuals are nominated by a nominator and then have to use data to back up their nomination and show that they are the best of the best, earning them a spot at the banquet and the chance to be put forth to the state banquet representing our region with a chance to win prestigious awards.

A 40-year-old man was arrested in the shooting death of a 33-year- old woman at the Stony Creek Apartments in Ashland shortly early Monday morning. Ashland Police say officers were dispatched to apartment B at 230 Mathews Avenue at 1:49 a.m.. Police say residents were hearing gunshots coming from the inside of an adjacent apartment and the bullets were coming through the walls. As police officers and an Ashland County Sheriff's deputy entered the building, they heard gun hots coming from inside apartment A. The officers found the entry door barricaded so they provided cover as the occupants of apartment B evacuated, as well as the building's other residents. A cell phone dialogue was established with the 40-year-old man. At 3:49 a.m., he removed the barricade, exited the apartment unarmed, and was taken into custody. The body of the 33-year-old woman was located inside apartment A and a cause of death has not been determined, although she had a visible gunshot wound. The 40-year-old man is in custody at the Ashland County Jail but no charges have been filed as an investigation continues. Officers from the Ashland County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol provided perimeter security at the scene.
