Suspect dead following nearly 27 hour standoff

The standoff is over at 36 Randall Road in Mansfield, after a sniper shot and killed the suspect as he walked through a hallway inside his home at around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the Richland County Coroner's Office, David Parker, 58, was pronounced dead at 12:27 p.m. OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.

WMFD's Greg Heindel was on the scene for the dramatic ending. 

The single shot to the head ended the situation that started at 8:30 a.m. Monday when a Columbia Gas worker went to the home asking to check for gas leaks. Parker pulled a rifle sending the worker running for cover. The worker called 911.

Over the hours, Parker fired more than 20 vollies of gunshots, and officers fired numerous tear gas canisters into his house, then filled his basement with water as they tried to flush him out. They also asked him more than 300 times through a bullhorn to come out with his hands up and surrender peacefully.

Parker has a history of turbulent behavior but only a misdemeanor criminal record.

The standoff drew numerous law enforcement agencies including Mansfield Police, the Richland County Sheriff's Office the Ohio Highway Patrol, the Columbus SWAT Team, Ohio BCI and the FBI.
