SULLIVAN, OH - Around 3:10 a.m. Tuesday morning the Ashland County Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 call from a female stating that someone was breaking into their residence in the 700 block of U.S. Route 224.

Residents, Doug and Cathy Roberts, heard their dogs barking and then noticed that the outside security lights were off. Upon exiting the home, they noticed that a four-wheeler had been pushed out of the garage.

While the couple was examining the yard, they heard something behind them before hearing two shots fired according to Chief Deputy Carl L. Richert of the Ashland County Sheriff's Office. 58-year-old, Doug Roberts was struck once in the back.

Cathy Roberts called 9-1-1, and an officer that was patrolling the area was able to respond to the scene within two minutes.

Once the scene was secured, EMS was able to come into the home and transport Roberts to Ashland Samaritan Hospital. He was later flown to Cleveland Metro in serious condition.

The Ashland Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted in creating a perimeter around the area. A K-9 was able to track the shooter to an area around Co. Hwy 681 just East of the scene.

At this time, officials are collecting evidence and are working to locate the shooter. No further details are available at this time.
