MANSFIELD, OH - The Madison Township Fire Department will be the host site of one of four Mobile Satellite Communications Trailers in Ohio.

The trailers are located strategically across the state.

Ohio Emergency Management Agency Executive Director Sima Merick says the communications trailers will be kept in a ready status to be deployed and utilized locally and in the region in the event of an emergency which requires additional communications.

"I think for the regional aspect of northeast Ohio is it reduces the response time and the deployment time, so we'll use Mansfield as an example," Merick says. "If they have a need to deploy this trailer, it's here, it's drive time may be 20 minutes and 10 minutes to set it up, where if it was in Columbus, there would be a request, we would have to get the people to come in, hook it up, drive it up, set it up. So we've reduced response times anywhere between 50 and 75 percent.

Once set up, the mobile unit will allow emergency responders in the area on the scene of the incident the ability to utilize a maximum of 30 WI-FI devices simultaneously within a 1,000-foot radius of the trailer and have a direct link to an orbiting satellite.

"If we think back to our communications assets 5-10 years ago, we weren't looking at the satellites we have today," Merick says. "We weren't looking at the mobile capability of being able to get this resource out. And people had to wait to connect and the speed of information was slower. Today this allows us, 1, for our first responders, 2, for our people to connect, and 3, for people to be able to get cover or go to shelter quicker."

Housing the unit at the Madison Township Fire Department will ensure the $42,000 mobile satellite trailer will be in a temperature-controlled environment that can be deployed quickly.

Richland County EMA Director Mike Bailey says the Madison Township Fire Department will also assist his agency in giving the unit a monthly checkout to ensure its readiness.
