UPDATE: Juvenile Taken Into Custody Over Bucyrus Lockdowns

BUCYRUS, OH - Bucyrus City School District and Bucyrus Police Department announced at 4:45 PM Monday that a juvenile was taken into custody in relation to the lockdown at Bucyrus Elementary and Secondary Schools. The juvenile had made threats over social media that had led to the temporary lockdown. The juvenile's name is being withheld as he is a minor.

Below is the press release posted to bucyrusschools.org.

"The Bucyrus City School District, in conjunction with the Bucyrus Police Department, is happy to announce that a juvenile was taken into custody after threats were made against the district on social media. This juvenile is awaiting a hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and the investigation is ongoing.

We are unable to release the identity of the individual in custody because the suspect is a minor,” said Chief David Koepke, Bucyrus Police Department. “We intend to pursue this case and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

“This is a major step forward in this case,” said Kevin Kimmel, Bucyrus Superintendent. “We will work collaboratively with all law enforcement agencies to ensure those individuals involved are prosecuted to fullest legal extent and school district rules and regulations.”

Bucyrus Elementary School and Bucyrus Secondary School lifted their lockdown on Monday, February 12th, 2018 at 12:42 PM. The school cited that they received an unsubstantiated threat of violence against the school district. 

The following statement was released by Bucyrus Superintendent Kevin Kimmel after the lockdown was lifted:

"We have lifted the internal lockdown at the Bucyrus Elementary School and the Bucyrus Secondary School. We received an unsubstantiated threat of violence against the school district and made the decision to do an internal lockdown to ensure the safety and security of all Bucyrus City School District students and staff members. Officers from the Bucyrus Police Department were dispatched to both buildings as an additional precautionary measure to ensure student and staff safety. 

We take all threats against our district very seriously and will do everything possible to make sure students are safe and secure when they are in our care. Again, the internal lockdown has been lifted and all Bucyrus City School district students and staff members are safe and secure."

The Bucyrus City School District Elementary and Secondary Schools were placed on lockdown at 12:03 PM on Monday, February 12th, 2018. 

The following message was released at the time of the lockdown initiation form Bucyrus Superintendent Kevin Kimmel:

"We have initiated an internal lock down at Bucyrus Elementary School and Bucyrus Secondary School. Law enforcement officials are on site to ensure the safety and security of all Bucyrus City School District students and staff members. We would ask all families to stay away from buildings until further notice. We will provide additional details as soon as possible."
