Sexually Violent Predator Specification Added In Grate Trial

ASHLAND, OH - A judge has added Sexually Violent Predator specifications to two counts in the Shawn Grate Murder Trial.

Judge Ron Forsthoeful added the specifications to Counts 9 and 10 of kidnapping. 

During the hearing, the prosecution brought on Ashland Detective Kim Mager to discuss statements from Shawn Grate during an interview she conducted. Grate admitted to raping a female in Mansfield two years prior to 2016. 

Grate also admitted to becoming sexually attracted to children after researching serial killers. 

Grate was found "Guilty beyond reasonable doubt" on all charges, which included four charges of aggravated murder and two charges of kidnapping, along with aggravated robbery.

The court has entered a finding of 'guilty' as to:

  • count one of the indictments [aggravated murder], specification one to count one of the indictments [committing or attempting to commit kidnapping], specification two to count one of the indictment,
  • count two of the indictment [aggravated murder], specification one to count two of the indictment [purposeful killing or intent to kill], specification two to count two of the indictment,
  • count three of the indictment [kidnapping],
  • count seven of the indictment [aggravated murder], specification one to count seven of the indictment [purposeful killing or intent to kill], specification two to count seven of the indictment [kidnapping and/or rape, robbery],
  • count eight of the indictment [aggravated murder], specification one to count eight of the indictment [purposeful killing or intent to kill], specification two to count eight of the indictment [kidnapping and/or rape, aggravated robbery],
  • count nine of the indictment [kidnapping], specification one to count nine of the indictment [sexual motivation],
  • count ten of the indictment [kidnapping], specification one to count ten of the indictment [sexual motivation],
  • and count twelve of the indictment [aggravated robbery].

Grate had also previously plead guilty to fifteen other charges, which included charges of rape, abuse of a corpse, burglary, and breaking and entering.

Grate's sentencing will take place May 18th, at 9:00 AM.
