Shawn Grate Sentenced To Death By Lethal Injection

ASHLAND, OH - Ashland County Common Pleas Court Judge Ron Forsthoefel has ruled that Shawn Grate is sentenced to death by way of Lethal Injection. 

Shawn Grate also received a mandatory 90 years to life in prison and received a tier 3 sex offender status. 

Grate will receive the lethal injection on September 13th, 2018, two years after he was arrested. 

"Nothing will ever fully erase the pain and heartbreak caused by the unspeakable crimes committed by this depraved killer," Ashland County Prosecutor Christopher Tunnell said in a press release. "Thanks to the hard work of so many, we delivered some measure of justice to the victims and their families and we ensured that Shawn Grate will be held fully accountable for his acts of evil."

Around 5:45 PM Monda,y May 7th, the Ashland County Common Pleas Court reconvened to announce a verdict in the trial of Shawn M. Grate. The jury deliberated for three and a half hours.

Grate was found "Guilty beyond reasonable doubt" on all charges, which included four charges of aggravated murder and two charges of kidnapping, along with aggravated robbery.

"The court has received and reviewed the verdict forms of the jury for all counts and specifications related to those counts," said Judge Ron Forsthoefel. Forsthoefel then read down the list of all the indictments.

The court has entered a finding of 'guilty' as to:

  • count one of the indictments [aggravated murder], specification one to count one of the indictments [committing or attempting to commit kidnapping], specification two to count one of the indictment,
  • count two of the indictment [aggravated murder], specification one to count two of the indictment [purposeful killing or intent to kill], specification two to count two of the indictment,
  • count three of the indictment [kidnapping],
  • count seven of the indictment [aggravated murder], specification one to count seven of the indictment [purposeful killing or intent to kill], specification two to count seven of the indictment [kidnapping and/or rape, robbery],
  • count eight of the indictment [aggravated murder], specification one to count eight of the indictment [purposeful killing or intent to kill], specification two to count eight of the indictment [kidnapping and/or rape, aggravated robbery],
  • count nine of the indictment [kidnapping], specification one to count nine of the indictment [sexual motivation],
  • count ten of the indictment [kidnapping], specification one to count ten of the indictment [sexual motivation],
  • and count twelve of the indictment [aggravated robbery].

One of the specifications labeled Grate a "sexually violent predator." Grate had also previously pleaded guilty to fifteen other charges, which included charges of rape, abuse of a corpse, burglary, and breaking and entering.
