ASHLAND, OH – OhioHealth and Mount Carmel Health System are partnering to invest $20 million in the development of a laundry facility that could create up to 100 jobs in Ashland County.

The new facility, which will be located on U.S. 250 near I-71, is a Central Ohio Medical Textiles (COMTEX) location. COMTEX is a non-profit corporation that has been cleaning and distributing linens for a number of health systems since its establishment in Columbus in 2004.

The new building, which is expected to open in 2019, is expected to handle more than 19 million pounds of linen in its first year, with the volume and the number of jobs increasing over time. It will serve OhioHealth Mansfield, Shelby Hospitals, and many other healthcare facilities in north central and northeast Ohio, ranging from Cleveland to Akron.

“This is a great opportunity for central Ohio to being new technology and jobs to north central Ohio,” said Jean M. Halpin, President of OhioHealth Mansfield and Shelby Hospitals. “Patients and families don’t often think about laundry during a hospital stay, but COMTEX ensures that we will have a high-quality product, cleaned to perfection when we need it to take care of the patients we serve.”

According to COMTEX Board Chairman Heather Brandon, “The $20 million investment is another example of the commitment OhioHealth and Mount Carmel have to the people of Ohio.”

In fact, OhioHealth has in total contributed $140 million to north central Ohio’s community since 2014.

“Linen and laundry service traditionally is one of the most physical jobs in health care, but these modern plants take out the physicality with computer control and equipment that transfers loads from washers to dryers,” said Myles Noel, CEO of COMTEX Columbus. “Ergonomically-engineered equipment will help associates ease the physical demand of doing laundry at this state-of-the-art new plant.”
