MANSFIELD, OH - The process of demolishing the old YMCA building in Mansfield has officially begun and will be completed once the building is clear of asbestos.

Built in 1956, current Vice President of YMCA Operations James Twedt says the old YMCA was a great place for people to come together.

"The old Y was what the new Y is now- it's a place for those to come and recreate and congregate and learn from each other, and build relationships, and get physically active... it meant a lot to a lot of people," said Twedt.

The YMCA was relocated from 455 Park Avenue West to its new location at 750 Scholl Road in December of 2000. The new location hosts community programs regularly, including a veteran's breakfast on the morning of November 8th.

"Being one of the longest-running nonprofits in the area since 1867, it's ingrained in the culture of Mansfield... it's a great community resource, it's an asset to the community... it just means a lot to everybody."

The demolition of this historic building should be finished in the next few months.
