MANSFIELD, OH - After the discovery of long-hidden brewery tunnels underneath the city, the Mansfield Memorial Museum has revealed plans to show an exhibit on the former breweries and bottling companies around the area. According to the museum's curator, the exhibit has been planned and researched for several years, but the discovery of the old cooling tunnels sparked renewed interest in the project.

"I was digging at Frank's Brewery," said Scott Schaut, Curator of the Mansfield Memorial Museum. "They found the tunnel... which is an incredible piece of history. So I thought, I'm doing the right thing because all of this is happening now."

The new exhibit will feature many facts and features of the breweries of Mansfield, painstakingly researched through old city records, maps, and pieces of broken bottles which were found around the area, along with some intact artifacts.

"We'll have approximately 180 different bottles on display with delivery boxes from a variety of the companies that were here," Schaut explained. "We've (dated) the breweries back until 1829, which is the earliest we could get them back through all the records that exist. What we're trying to do is put a comprehensive history of all of this. There were nine breweries in Mansfield, one distillery, and 33 bottling companies."

Schaut is still collecting information about the project and asks that Mansfield residents whose ancestors worked at any of the local breweries or distilleries come forward with any other information or artifacts to help add to the information that will be presented in the exhibit.

"I think people will learn something, and I hope they enjoy it because there's such a variety of things," Schaut said. "There are going to be very historically-important pieces that would be on display for the first time for the public to see."

The exhibit is set to open to the public in March of 2019.
