FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, OH - Flames engulfed a barn on Brubaker Creek Road Friday afternoon, causing nearly $200,000 in damage. Nobody was injured, but the structure was a total loss.

Franklin Township Fire, Madison Fire, Mansfield Fire, Mifflin Fire, and the Air Force Fire Departments all arrived at the scene after a call for assistance came in around 5:00 PM. A witness reported that a neighbor had heard an explosion, looked outside and saw large amounts of smoke coming from the property. The neighbor then called 911.

Dozens of firefighters worked to contain the flames to the barn, keeping the fire away from nearby trees and fields. The roof of the barn had caved in, blocking access from above and forcing firefighters to cut through the walls to extinguish the blaze.

The Franklin Township Fire Department says that the explosions heard were likely to be a result of the fire rather than the cause, as propane tanks and other similarly explosive substances were stored within the barn. The owners were not on the property at the time, but estimate that the total loss at $175,000 to $200,000. The structure is still standing but is at risk of collapse. It will likely be torn down after the investigation into the cause of the fire is complete.
