ASHLAND, OH - Sugar Grove Tree Farm changed hands this week, with the new owners taking over the business by holding a ribbon cutting. New owner Ben Smith was initially apprehensive about the transfer but now feels more comfortable taking over the day-to-day operations.

"It's been incredibly intimidating," said Smith. "We've been part of the agricultural business for the last 20 years, my wife and I. We've grown up around it."

Smith says that he never really saw himself or his family selling trees or anything of the sort, but the way things turned out took him by surprise.

"In the summertime, we have a farm market," Smith explained. "One of the things missing in the repertoire was Christmas trees. It's something we've kind of always said (we) didn't think we'd be part of. We always said, 'There's a gentleman a few miles down the road, go see him.' The gentleman down the road came to see us," he joked. "This really is a legacy that we're trying to continue out here that the Rafelds have taken care of and nurtured for the last 35 years. We're just overwhelmed with the amount of support today."

Sugar Grove Tree Farm is located in Ashland at 1619 Township Road 1455. For more information, call the farm office at (419) 282-5151.
