MANSFIELD, OH - UPDATE: Additional warming shelters have opened since the first version of this story was published. The Shelby YMCA, located at 111 West Smiley Road, along with the First United Methodist Church at 18 South Gamble Street in Shelby, are also temporarily being used as warming shelters. First United Methodist Church staff ask that patrons enter through the back entrance.

The original version of this story is preserved below for posterity.

In preparation for Wednesday night's extreme cold snap, the Richland County Emergency Management Agency is partnering with the Red Cross and other area agencies to open temporary warming shelters throughout the Mansfield area.

"The cold weather is supposed to be starting at about 7:00 PM (Tuesday) night, then going into Friday morning," said Rick Evans, Interim Director of the Richland County Emergency Management Agency. "Because of all that, we've decided to open a warming shelter in Mansfield. It's actually going to be located at the Salvation Army building there on Second and Main Street."

The shelter will be in operation from 6 PM through 7 AM Tuesday night, Wednesday night, and Thursday night.

"We're working in conjunction with the Red Cross," Evans said. "They're providing us with some cots and blankets, so we're going to have those available. We'll have coffee, hot chocolate, that type of thing there. We'll have chairs and tables so people can kind of take it easy in a warm center for a while."

The local Emergency Response Team (ERT) is staffing the warming shelter, helping keep anyone warm who needs it. Evans is hoping more people take advantage of the warming center this week, as many people were not aware that it was in operation during the last cold snap. Those without transportation to the warming shelters can call the Emergency Management Agency's Office at (419) 774-5686 and ask for transportation, if within acceptable driving distance.

The Salvation Army warming shelter is located at 47 South Main Street. Other warming shelters can be found at Harmony House on 124 West 3rd Street, and at Reaching Out, located at 356 Harker Street.
