RICHLAND COUNTY, OH - Shawn Grate received his sentence on Friday, March 1st for the charges he faced in Richland County.

Grate changed his plea to guilty to charges of aggravated murder, murder, and 2 counts of gross abuse of a corpse.

Shawn Grate received consecutive life sentences for his crimes in Richland County. Grate was sentenced to life in prison without parole for aggravated murder, and life for murder, as well as two sentences of 12 months each for the gross abuse of a corpse charges.

Grate has now received four total convictions for killing women, two of those in Ashland County and two of those in Richland County. In the case of Rebekah Leicy, Grate plead guilty to aggravated murder and gross abuse of a corpse, and in the case of Candace Cunningham Grate plead guilty to murder and gross abuse of a corpse. As part of his agreement to change his plea, the aggravated murder charge in the Cunningham case was dropped to murder, and in the cases of both women, the other charges were dropped.

After being sentenced to death by way of lethal injection in Ashland County Common Pleas Court in June of 2018, Grate appeared in Richland County Court in September of 2018 to face one count of murder, three counts of aggravated murder, three counts of kidnapping, three counts of tampering with evidence, two count of gross abuse of a corpse, and two counts of aggravated arson.

Grate waived his right to a trial and his right to appeal and instead chose to change his plea and be sentenced.
