911 Audio Released From Officer Involved Shooting In Ashland

ASHLAND, OH - Two individuals were transported after an officer-involved shooting Saturday. 

On March 16th at approximately 11:40 PM, two Ashland Police Division Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 600 block of Sandusky Street in response to an intoxicated male threatening two family members with a knife.

According to the 911 audio, the suspect had a history of mental illness and appeared to be agitated. When Officers arrived, the male advanced toward them and an officer fired one shot from his issued service pistol.

The suspect and a female victim were transported by Ashland Fire Division personnel to UH Samaritan Hospital. The suspect has since been moved to an outside medical facility, where he remains. 

According to a press release posted on social media by the Ashland Divison of Police, APD reached out to the Ohio Attorney General's Burau of Criminal Identification & Investigation to investigate the officer's use of force. A full report including more details should be reached upon the conclusion of the investigation.

"The citizens of Ashland County may rest assured that this matter will be fully investigated and the facts will be released when appropriate," the release reads. "All parties involved are presumed innocent until proven guilty."

On March 16th, 2019, at approximately 11:40 PM, officers from the City of Ashland, Division of Police were called to a residence on Sandusky Street in the City of Ashland.

While on-scene, one of the responding officers was involved in a "use of force" incident against a male resident. The male subject was transported from the scene by the City of Ashland, Division of Fire to UH Samaritan Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to an outside medical facility where he remains.

The Division of Police contacted the Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation to investigate the officer-involved use of force. The Division of Police retains jurisdiction to investigate all other allegations arising from this incident.

Prosecutor Tunnell and his staff will review the investigatory work product of all involved agencies to ensure that this incident is thoroughly and professionally evaluated. Prosecutor Tunnell, in consultation with the Ashland County Grand Jury, will release a more detailed report documenting the facts of this incident when the investigation is complete.

It is the intention of the Prosecuting Attorney to make this process as transparent as possible, but also to gather the facts in a manner that ensures fairness to all involved, and public confidence in the outcome. The citizens of Ashland County may rest assured that this matter will be fully investigated and the facts will be released when appropriate. All parties involved are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

No further statement will be forthcoming while the investigation is pending.
