UPDATE: Police Fatally Shoot Intruder Wielding Box Cutter

MANSFIELD, OH - An incident involving Mansfield Police Officers left one man dead on Monday at an apartment complex in the area of 650 West Straub Road in Mansfield.

According to Assistant Chief Keith Porch of the Mansfield Police Department, the incident began when an altercation broke out in apartment 208 of the apartment complex located on Straub Road. Around 4:25 PM, Mansfield Police Dispatch received a call from one of the complex's residents reported that an unknown male suspect was breaking in, believing the man was under the influence. The intruder was armed with a box cutter.

Officers Matt Davis, Thayne Telquist, and Scott Kotterman arrived at the scene before they noticed that the suspect had injured himself with the box cutter. The officers attempted to use tasers to incapacitate the suspect, but the tasers had no effect. Officers were forced to shoot the suspect as the conflict escalated, with the suspect succumbing to the fatal injuries.

The Richland County Coroner's Office was on-scene to confirm the death. The incident is still under investigation by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). As per department policy, the officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave. None of the three officers involved reported any injuries at the scene.
