City Of Mansfield Declares May 21st As Operation Clean Sweep

MANSFIELD, OH - Mansfield Mayor Tim Theaker has announced that the City of Mansfield and Downtown Mansfield Inc. have decleared May 21st, 2019 as Operation Sweep. 

Operation Sweep is in support of Earth Stewardship Month and the Great American Clean up. 

"Downtown Mansfield, Inc. is excited to continue our partnership with the City of Mansfield in our joint efforts to beautify and clean our community." Jennifer Gerberick Kime, CEO of Downtown Mansfield Inc, stated. "It is through these collaborative partnerships and dedicated volunteers that we are able to continue the beautification of Mansfield."

On Tuesday May 21st of this year, volunteers, local business people, and organizations can join the City of Mansfield between 4:45 PM and 5:00 PM at the Gazebo in Central Park to "Plant Pride, Not Litter". The City of Mansfield will provide collection bags, gloves, and disposal of the litter collected. On the same date, Volunteers will be planting flowers in all the planters in the downtown area. 

Volunteers are asked to don their work clothes and bring their own brooms and/or shovels if they have them. 

"For 23 years we have witnessed this unique partnership with Downtown Mansfield Inc. for this clean up event as we continue to demonstrate our pride and dedication to our city," Theaker said. "This project is instrumental in encouraging others to be a part of Planting Pride, Not Litter in our city, and perfect for visitors who come to the many activities in the downtown area throughout the year. We hope you join us for this 23rd anniversary clean up event."

All volunteers will receive a certificate of appreciation and a small token of appreciation for their participation courtesy of a grant received by the City of Mansfield. Volunteers will also be entered into a drawing to win prizes at the Earth Stewardship Awards Ceremony as a participant in this event.

A rain date has been set for Thursday, May 23rd, 2019 in case of inclement weather.

  • Woman Shot To Death, Man Arrested In Ashland

    A 40-year-old man was arrested in the shooting death of a 33-year- old woman at the Stony Creek Apartments in Ashland shortly early Monday morning. Ashland Police say officers were dispatched to apartment B at 230 Mathews Avenue at 1:49 a.m.. Police say residents were hearing gunshots coming from the inside of an adjacent apartment and the bullets were coming through the walls. As police officers and an Ashland County Sheriff's deputy entered the building, they heard gun hots coming from inside apartment A. The officers found the entry door barricaded so they provided cover as the occupants of apartment B evacuated, as well as the building's other residents. A cell phone dialogue was established with the 40-year-old man. At 3:49 a.m., he removed the barricade, exited the apartment unarmed, and was taken into custody. The body of the 33-year-old woman was located inside apartment A and a cause of death has not been determined, although she had a visible gunshot wound. The 40-year-old man is in custody at the Ashland County Jail but no charges have been filed as an investigation continues. Officers from the Ashland County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol provided perimeter security at the scene.
