MANSFIELD, OH - A Mansfield man was charged with receiving, distributing and possessing visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Christian K. Smith Jr, 44-years-old, was indicted on child pornography charges, according to the United States Attorney Office Northern District of Ohio.

The indictment states that Smith knowingly received, attempted to receive and distributed numerous computer files which contained visual depictions of real minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

The incident occurred in early May of this year.

Smith also possessed two cellular phones and a laptop computer that contained child pornography on or about May 2nd, 2019, according to the indictment.

If convicted, the defendant's sentence will be determined by the Court after review of factors unique to the case, including the defendant's prior criminal record, if any, the defendant's role in the offense and the characteristics of the violation.

In all cases, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and in most cases it will be less than the maximum, according to the United States Attorney's Office Northern District of Ohio.

Assistant U.S Attorney Carol M. Skutnik is prosecuting the case following an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Child Exploitation Task Force in Mansfield.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government's burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
