ONTARIO, OH- Matthew Carey has been sworn in as the new Chief of the Springfield Fire Department.

Carey has nearly 20 years of experience on the job as a firefighter.

"I've been a fireman for about 17 years," Carey said.  "I was at Mt. Gilead. I've worked in the City of Worthington, the City of Franklin, and Morris County and I was at Monroe Township and outside Cincinnati for about the last 12 years or so."

He wanted to come back to the Richland County area in order to be closer to family.

"The trustees kept telling me that there's good people here and there are," Carey said.  "It's been really nice being able to come back home and be around my family and have good people to be able to work with."

Carey started as the Springfield Fire Chief on June 1 and has had a very positive experience thus far.

"It's amazing.  There's a lot of good people here," Carey said.
