MANSFIELD, OH- VFW Post 9943 retired nearly 3,000 flags with honor at their annual flag burning ceremony on Saturday.

Honorably burning or burying flags is the proper to dispose of flags that have become old and worn.

Commander of VFW Post 9943, Murray Konves said that it is especially important to members of the military and law enforcement to have flags disposed of in an honorable way.

"It's an honor for soldiers and veterans to have served underneath that flag so we want it disposed of in the proper manner," Murray said.  "So, once this fire goes out tomorrow or Monday we will sweep up all the grommets, the little metal things that you hang it by and bury those."
