MANSFIELD, OH- The Mansfield YMCA hosted a LiveStrong Rock-A-Thon on Saturday to help raise money for programming aimed at cancer survivors.

The event filled the YMCA gym with rocking chairs for survivors as well as their families and friends.  The Rock-A-Thon worked similarly to a charity walk or run. Cancer survivors from the LiveStrong program gathered teams and signed up for a certain amount of time to rock in rocking chairs.

Personal trainer and instructor at the Mansfield YMCA, Lori Gailey organized the event.  She said that she wanted to come up with a unique way to raise money for the program.

"The money goes toward the LiveStrong program to cover the cost of the program for things like instructors and t-shirts," Gailey said.  "The people who participate in the program get a free membership to the Y so that's a big part of the cost of the program."

The Livestrong program is a 12 week free program that runs twice a year to provide support for local cancer survivors and their families.

"They get to be in groups with people who have been through similar things that they have and sometimes just to be in a group of people like that really helps them to find their new normal and feel better about talking about their disease," Gailey said.
