LUCAS, OH - The Mansfield/Richland County Public Library has announced a temporary closure of one of its branches.

A post on the library's Facebook page announced the closure on Monday afternoon. According to Mansfield/Richland County Public Library Director Chris May, the decision to close the branch was due to safety concerns.

"We have a little bit of structural damage on one of our walls here at the Lucas Branch," May said. "We've had a little bit of water leaking in for some time. Nothing major, but now the wall is actually starting to bulge out and a crack has developed down the middle of the wall. We saw that late last week. With some of the rains we've had and the rain that could be coming, we made the decision to go ahead and close for the time being until we can get somebody in to assess the damage."

The building that houses the Village of Lucas' library, the Lucas-Monroe Township Veterans' Memorial Building, is also home to the village Post Office, and is owned by Monroe Township. Since the Library is not in possession of the property, all inspections and work orders must be cleared with the building owners.

Library staff hopes to have crews assessing the damage by Friday, August 23rd. While the library is closed, library services will be fulfilled by the other nearby branches of the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library.

"We have a lot of customers in Lucas that have holds available or that will be becoming available," May said. "We are contacting them individually to see if they would like to pick those holds up at other locations. The Madison Branch is close, the Main Library is fairly close, as is the Butler Branch or any other branch where they would like to pick up their items. We're hoping to figure out something in the near future if this continues on locally where people can pick up their holds as well."

The branch's book drop is reportedly still accessible for returns. For more updates or information, visit the MRCPL Facebook page.
