MANSFIELD, OH - Youngstown State University President and former Ohio State Head Football Coach Jim Tressel visited Mansfield Senior High School on Tuesday to discuss the importance of education.

"Jim Tressel is an outstanding educator, motivator and a man of exceptional character. I am thrilled to have him join us to help ignite that Tyger roar that will carry us into a successful year." Stan Jefferson stated in a press release before the press conference.

Tressel talked with teachers and school board members on how important the role of education plays in a community.

One aspect that Tressel focused on is instilling hope in young individuals.

"We have to create that hope for young people, and, I'm biased, but I really believe that that hope is best served through education," Jim Tressel stated during a morning press conference. "We talk all the time about lots of problems.... about opioid problems, we have crime problems, we have this, we have that... I think education can help solve those."

Tressel and Mansfield City School Superintendent also emphasized the importance of parenting and how parents in the Mansfield City School District can work with the district to help create a positive learning environment for local youth.

"We must really continue to do everything we can to reach out to our parental community," said Jefferson. "We have to build that relationship. It will take time to build that relationship."

Jefferson mentioned that talking with old players from Mansfield as well as the Ohio State University gave him a chance to know their families. Jefferson and Tressel both agree that a partnership between the parents in the community and the district can lead to strong results.

Tressel also mentioned that innovation must be an important factor in a school district, and goes beyond K-12 teaching.

Stan Jefferson was part of Tressel's staff at Ohio State from 2004-2010. After Tressel left OSU in 2010, Jefferson continued to work with then Head Coach Urban Meyer before retiring in 2017.

As Head Coach of Ohio State Football, Tressel won seven Big Ten championships and appeared in eight BCS post-season bowl games. His record while at OSU stands at 94-21, which includes a 8-1 record against Michigan.

Jim Tressel contract at Youngstown State University was extended through June 2020 after the Youngstown State University Board of Trustees unanimously extend his contract.
