SHELBY, OH  - Richland County Commissioner and Republican Party Chairwoman Marilyn John has announced her candidacy for the Ohio House of Representatives District 2. Ohio’s 2nd House District is currently held by State Representative Mark Romanchuk (R-Ontario), who is term-limited.

For the past ten years, Marilyn has worked as a public servant, serving the residents of Richland County. As the Mayor of the City of Shelby (a position she held from 2010 to 2015) and one of three Richland County Commissioners (from 2015 to the present), John successfully won reelection for both seats.

“Serving the residents of Richland County has truly been an honor and I look forward to continuing my service as State Representative for Ohio’s 2nd House District,” John said. “My work as a Mayor and County Commissioner has included fiscal, conservative budgeting, strengthening economic development and developing strong leaders for our future. I look forward to bringing my experience to Columbus to better serve the people of Richland County.”

Several community leaders endorsed Marilyn John for the Ohio House’s 2nd District, including the following:

  • Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder,
  • Ohio Senate President Larry Obhof,
  • State Representative Mark Romanchuk,
  • Congressman Troy Balderson,
  • and Congressman Bob Gibbs.

Over the past four and half years, John's priority has been improving financial outlooks for Richland County, helping to establish a rainy day fund, stabilize carryover funds, and create a five-year "capital improvements" plan resulting in an improved financial rating for Richland County.

Before becoming Mayor of the City of Shelby, Marilyn worked as a Commercial Lines Underwriter for Shelby Insurance and as the Director of the Shelby Senior Center. In 2012, she created LeaderRichland, a leadership program for junior high school students to talk about career paths and workforce opportunities, which has served over 7500 students to date.

Marilyn has been on the Leadership Team for the Richland Community Development Group for the past 8 years, is a member of the Rotary Club of Mansfield and the County Commissioners Association of Ohio.
