MANSFIELD, OH - Everyday, millions of parents and caregivers travel with children in their vehicles. While some children are buckled in properly, most are not.

"In 2017, a child under thirteen was involved in a passenger vehicle crash every thirty-two seconds," said Reed Richmond, a Child Passenger Safety Technician at Richland Public Health. "Using car seats that are age- appropriate and size-appropriate is the best way to keep your children safe."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes are a leading killer of children, and while fatalities and injuries declined in 2017 from 2016, there is still work to be done to eliminate these preventable tragedies. Car seats, booster seats, and seat belts can make all the differnece.

"There were 312 children under the age of five saved in 2017 because they were using restraints," Richmond said. "Car seats matter, and having the right car seat installed and used the right way is critical."

To have your car seat install checked by Reed Richmond, Certified Car Seat Install Instructor of Richland County, simply make an appointment by calling the Richland Health Department at 419-774-4500. Richmond will be conducting Car Seat install checks during Child Passenger Safety Week,  September 15th through the 21st .
