MANSFIELD, OH - The Richland Soil and Water Conservation District (RSWCD) observed the 76th anniversary of their year-end annual celebrations on Thursday evening, gathering a large crowd to help celebrate the group's accomplishments throughout the year.

"We all have to grow our food on soil and we have to have clean water to drink," said Erica Thomas, RSWCD Program Administrator. "Richland County is very unique in that we have eight different watersheds in the county. We're on the continental divide, so we have three that drain up north to Lake Erie, and the other five go down to the Ohio River. We really are an important county right now because we're at the head waters where everything is flowing down. We're at the start of what's going to the Ohio River and Lake Erie. It's very important, what we're doing to conserve soil and water, because it's going to ultimately impact the whole country."

The guest speaker for the event, Guy Denny, is a naturalist, as well as a writer and photographer. The winner of Conservationist of the Year was Win Meek, and the Volunteer of the Year was Mark Meinzer. A special "thank you" was given to the Richland County Commissioners, as well as the Ohio Soil and Water Commission, and USDA-NRCS for their support.
