ASHLAND, OH- The Ashland University women's basketball team earned their third NCAA Division II regional championship this past weekend by knocking off Drury at Kates Gymnasium 74-62.  Throughout the tournament, whenever the Eagles were pushed the team always seemed to have an answer.

"I think what this team has done well regardless of shooting is that they have fought we have great fight," said head coach Robyn Fralick.  "I thought we saw that this weekend.  We didn't play perfect, there were patches of the games in all the tournament games where we would make mistakes, but we played hard and I felt that anytime a team made a run we fought back."

It's the youthful energy that this team has and also the veteran status," said All-Region first teamer Andi Daugherty.  "We have six upperclassmen who also played a lot last year.  So I think it's a combination of experience with a combination of fearlessness of the unknown and I think it's something that the team has strived when we have been under pressure."

Next Tuesday, the Eagles will take on 26-8 West Texas A&M in the national quarterfinal in Columbus at Ohio Dominican University.  The Buffalo's have size at 6'4", 6'2", 6'1", 6'0".  Regardless, Fralick says everyone at this level is exceptional. "Everybody playing now has had an incredible season.  We are down to eight teams and that's telling you if you have made it this far you are doing things well.  They are big and they score the ball well, they shoot it well.  I think that stands out and they play a different style then what we have seen recently."

"I think our team is athletic," says Daugherty.  "We can trump a lot of teams with our speed and athleticism.  That's just the type of game we play.  We are sprinting up and down the court all the time."

If the Eagles are able to "trump" West Texas A&M on Tuesday, they'll face the winner of 30-3 Harding out Searcy Arkansas and 27-4 Queens out of New York City in the national semifinal the next night March 22nd at 8:30 pm at ODU.  The National championship game for women's Division II college basketball is Friday, March 24th at 7 pm back at Ohio Dominican.

WMFD will have more in Friday's sports with Eagle players Renee Stimpert and Laina Snyder.
