NORTH ROBINSON, OH-  The Colonel Crawford softball team has started 2017 at 12-1 overall and 8-1 in the Northern Ten Conference, good for first place by a half-game over Upper Sandusky (11-4, 7-1) heading into the second half of the regular season.  And for coach Chuck Huggins, its just that, a good start.

"We're off to a good start, but a good start does not necessarily guarantee a good finish," says Huggins.  "We are happy with where we are at right now, but not satisfied.  I can tell that the girls are still hungry.  They have been focused whether it be a practice or a game, does not matter what we are doing.  We're trying to have fun and trying to get it done as our mantra says."

In 2016, the Eagles split the N-10 championship with Upper Sandusky with an overall record of 23-4.  But shortstop Alexus Burkhart feels this year's team is hitting the ball better.

"I think our hitting is better," Burkhart says.  "Last year we may not have hit as well as we have been this year and hopefully, we continue to do so."

Having graduated four productive seniors from a year ago, the team has not seemed to miss a beat.  At least that's the feeling of CC third baseman Abbi Teglovic.  "No, not really, we have good team chemistry and we all work hard no matter what's going on in practice," the senior says.  "We always pick each other up."

In comparisons to last year's squad, Huggins thinks as his shortstop Burkhart believes the hitting is better.  "I think offensively we are a little deeper this year," Huggins says.  "It does not matter what nine we have in the lineup it just seems like they gel together.  Whether it be the short game or baserunning, whether it be getting that clutch hit it just seems like they are focused on what needs to be done."

The Eagles will play two with Ridgedale (7-5, 2-5) on Friday at home, then on the road Monday.  Both games start at 5 pm.
