BUCYRUS, OH-  After an opening season loss to Liberty-Benton 49-0, the Wynford football team has righted the ship so-to-speak with five straight wins the last two coming over undefeated teams.  Carey 37-20 two weeks ago, and Mohawk 7-0 last Friday to stand at 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the Northern Ten.

"The resiliency of our kids I thought was maybe a little different last week than it was against Carey,"  said head coach Gabe Helbert.  The defensive struggle and the battle there and the week before with the back and forth scoring.  I thought our kids stepped up to that challenge.  Our league is good.  Small school football in this area is very competitive."

One of the reasons the Royals have won five in a row is the play of first-year starting quarterback Wyatt Smith who has thrown for 896 yards and 11 touchdowns while rushing for 701 yards with seven rushing touchdowns.  Smith says the game is starting to come to him.  "I've had more experience.  After a couple of games under my belt, I became more confident ."

This week, the Royals will head to 5-1 Lima Central Catholic on Saturday night.  Wynford roughed up LCC last season 43-7. But the Thunderbirds return plenty on both sides of the ball.  "They are a 5-1 football team they do a lot of things well," says Helbert.  Very athletic.  From a defensive standpoint, they return ten starters.  That jumps out on film.  They are experienced they have talented athletes, they run well too.  They do things offensively that we haven't seen in a few weeks. They are 5-1 for a reason they will be a major challenge for us."

The Royals will face a major challenge next week when they jump back into Northern Ten play when they host Seneca East who goes into Friday's game against 5-1 Mohawk undefeated at 5-0.
