ASHLAND, OH-  The Ashland University Eagles (10-1, 9-0) claimed an outright Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference football title and punched their ticket to the postseason with a 31-19 win over Saginaw Valley State University.   But it wasn't easy.  AU had to come from 13-3 down in the second quarter to pick up their tenth straight win and 22nd consecutive regular-season home win.

After Aidan Simenc put AU up 3-0 on a 38-yard field goal with 2:55 remaining in the first quarter, the Cardinals answered with a touchdown on a four-yard run by Ryan Conklin, after the extra point SVSU was up 7-3.  Saginaw Valley would strike again with the big play when Conklin found Chad Gailliard on a 73-yard pass play putting SVSU up 13-3 when the point after failed.

With 26 seconds remaining in the quarter the Eagles would get their first touchdown on a one-yard run by Mack Mikulski closing the gap to 13-10 at the half.  The score was set up on a 48-yard completion to Matt Wilcox from Tarnowski.  The Eagles would take the lead for good in the third quarter when Tarnowski fired and 8-yard touchdown pass to Logan Bolin. After Simenc added the extra point AU led 17-13.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles increased their lead to 24-13 when Tarnowski found Stanley Jackson Jr. with a 15-yard touchdown pass at the 6:06 mark of the fourth quarter.

After an interception by the Ashland's Dale Irby deep in Cardinal territory, the Eagles put the game away at the 4:45 mark of the fourth quarter with Mikulski scoring his second touchdown of the day catching a four-yard pass from Tarnowski making it 31-13 AU.

SVSU would score late failing on a two-point conversion making the final 31-19 in favor of Ashland University.  With the win, Ashland University will play host to the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats (9-2) on Saturday at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field at a time to be determined. It's their second trip to the playoffs in the last three years and fifth under Lee Owens.  The Eagles have previously advanced to the second season under Owens in 2007, '08, '12, and '15.   Overall it's the seventh time in program history that AU has advanced to the playoffs the previous two being in 1986 and 1997.
